Privacy Policy
Last updated August 22, 2026
This policy describes what Funess collects, why, and what we do with it. It is written to match how the product actually works. If anything here is unclear, contact us.
What we collect
- Your mobile number. Required to sign up. We verify it once by sending a text with a code. We use it afterwards to text you payment reminders about the subscriptions you share, and so friends can find you by number.
- Your email address and password. Your email is how you sign in and the only way we can let you back in if you forget your password. Passwords are stored hashed; we never see them.
- Your name. Shown to the people you share subscriptions with, so they know who is charging them.
- Your Venmo username, and the display name and photo on that public Venmo profile. We read the public profile page to confirm the handle exists and to show you and your friends the right person. We never connect to your bank and never see your Venmo balance, transactions or login.
- The subscriptions you add — the service, the price, the number of seats, and any notes you write.
- The login and password for a shared subscription, if you choose to save one. These are encrypted before they are stored. They are shown only to people you have added to that subscription, only when they ask, and every disclosure is recorded. They are never put into a text message or an email.
- What is owed between you and each friend — the charges raised, the payments recorded, and when.
- Standard server logs — IP address, browser, and the pages requested. Used to run the site and to rate-limit abuse.
Phone numbers of people who are not users
When you invite someone by phone number, we send that number a single text saying you invited them. If they do not sign up, we do not keep the number and we do not text it again. We do not sell, rent or share these numbers with anyone.
Text messages
We text you in three situations: once at signup to verify your number; when a payment between you and a friend is due; and, occasionally, a request for an optional tip if Funess has saved you money. Reminders can be turned off for any friend from that friend's statement. Message and data rates may apply.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
- We do not run advertising, and there are no third-party ad or tracking scripts on the site.
- We do not move money. Funess calculates what is owed and gives you a pre-filled Venmo link; the payment happens between you and the other person, in Venmo.
Who else sees your data
- The friends you share with see your name, your Venmo handle and photo, the subscriptions you share with them, and what is owed between you.
- Twilio delivers our text messages and therefore handles your phone number and the message body.
- Google Cloud hosts the site, and Neon hosts the database.
- We disclose data if the law requires it.
Closing your account
You can close your account at any time from Settings → Close my account. That removes your name, phone number, email address, Venmo handle and photo, and takes you out of every subscription.
Balances between you and another person are kept, with your name taken off them. A balance is a record between two people, and one of them should not be able to erase the other's copy of it. Your phone number and Venmo handle are released, so you can sign up again later if you want to.
Your rights
You can see and correct most of what we hold from your account pages. To request a copy of your data, or deletion beyond what closing your account does, contact us and we will respond within 30 days. If you are in California or the EU/UK, you have rights of access, correction, deletion, portability and objection under the CCPA and the GDPR; the same contact route applies.
Cookies
We set one cookie to keep you signed in and one to protect forms against cross-site request forgery. Both are necessary for the site to work. We do not use analytics or advertising cookies.
Children
Funess is not for people under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us data, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you before it takes effect.
